New York City Transport authorities have added concrete barriers to nearly 60 intersections near the Hudson River Park Bikeway, after Tuesday’s terror attack left eight dead and 11 injured.
The city hopes this measure will prevent similar attacks in the future, but is open to revisiting the layout if it causes too much congestion, according to The New York Times.
Terrorist Sayfullo Saipov used his rental truck to mow down unsuspecting bikers before hitting a school bus and jumping out of his car yelling “Allahu Akbar.” He was eventually shot by police, taken into custody and transferred to a city hospital to be treated.
Ben Sarle, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, said the barriers would be placed near the bike path between 59th Street and Battery Park. Sarle believes trading speed for overall safety is in the city’s best interests, and said the measures are being carried out in conjunction with the New York City Police Department.
“Our No. 1 priority is keeping New Yorkers safe and secure,” Sarle said. “Nobody is better at keeping New Yorkers safe than the N.Y.P.D.”
Jennifer K. Post, spokeswoman for the state Transportation Department, said the process of inserting the barrier began Thursday morning, and the situation will be continually reexamined and updated as further needs arise.
