Trump wasn’t going to ban NFL players from kneeling, now he’s taking matters into his own hands

President Trump is taking the debate over national anthem protests to the people.

Apparently tired of waiting for the National Football League to take decisive action against players who refuse to stand for the national anthem, the president has taken matters into his own hands.

Trump is asking supporters who believe in standing for “The Star-Spangled Banner” to sign a petition launched on the GOP website.

“The President has asked for a list of supporters who stand for the National Anthem. Add your name below to show your patriotism and support,” reads the petition issued on Thursday by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee.

Trump is putting pressure on the NFL after commissioner Roger Goodell announced this week, after meeting with players and team owners, that the NFL would not require players to stand for the anthem.

Firing off a tweet on Wednesday,  Trump, who has repeatedly called the protests disrespectful to veterans and the military, called the NFL’s decision,“Too much talk, not enough action,”

It remains to be seen if a petition will influence any decision by the league to take action against protesting players, as the president suggested when he called for them to be fired if they refused to honor the flag. The NFL went ahead and endorsed criminal justice reform legislation Monday, in spite of the outcry of Americans and fans who have called on the NFL to focus on the sport.
