A “new, jarring detail” revealed Friday about the man who shot and killed five people at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport will do little to help airlines with their already battered image.
Turns out, Delta Airlines paged Esteban Santiago over the public address system to pick up his gun before he used that weapon to open fire on fellow travelers, The Sun-Sentinel reported.
It was previously reported that Santiago checked his gun in baggage and used it after landing on a flight from Canada.

A 30-page report from the Broward Sheriff’s Office reviewing the deadliest shooting at a U.S. airport included details of the incident, to include that Santiago heard his name being called to come to a Delta service desk.
In addition to the five elderly people killed, six others were wounded in the shooting,

The report sheds some new light on the extent of the radio problems police and fire personnel encountered in trying to communicate that day when thousands of state, local and federal officials converged on the airport to answer a call for backup.
At one point, the crush of users sent the radio system into a “fail-soft” mode and all connections between responding agencies were lost, the report states. Dispatchers were unable to quickly reconnect the groups and told “all units to stop transmitting until the radio bridges could be restored.”
The report recommended “opportunities for improvement,” to include better communications and requiring first responders from other agencies to report to “staging areas” to receive assignments, rather than “self-dispatching.”
