Stunning video has shown the power of Hurricane Irma in a way not seen by many before.
The storm is so powerful that it has literally absorbed ocean water into its core enough that it dried out the ocean surrounding the Bahamas.
The videos that showed dry land where the ocean would normally have been shared more than 100,000 times.
I am in disbelief right now… This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!!! That’s as far as they see #HurricaneIrma wtf pic.twitter.com/AhPAonjO6s

The Washington Post’s meteorologist Angela Fritz explained.
As a meteorologist, there are things you learn in textbooks that you may never see in person. You know they happen theoretically, but the chances of seeing the most extraordinary weather phenomena are slim to none.
This is one of those things — a hurricane strong enough to change the shape of an ocean.
Basically, Hurricane Irma is so strong and its pressure is so low, it’s sucking water from its surroundings into the core of the storm. It happened in the Bahamas on Friday and Saturday, and now it’s happening on the Gulf Coast of Florida on Sunday.
The water did go back to Long island in the Bahamas eventually.
A similar occurrence happened in Tampa Bay, where what was at one time a body of water became dry land and, as Yashar Ali called it, a dog park.
#Tampa bay now an effective dog park as we wait for #irma. With @CityofTampa parks closed ahead of storm, this is the best we’ve got. pic.twitter.com/Op3FADmL3V

The same phenomenon happened in the Bahamas yesterday, is reportedly taking place in Tampa Bay: the ocean displaced https://t.co/Z5bnnze2r8 pic.twitter.com/3ZBx2fmZL4

But it would be wise to get any animals and humans far from the shore, becasue when the waters returns it will likely be with a vengence.
The ocean would return quickly but probably not in tsunami form.

“Probably.” It’s Irma, assume the worst and hope for the best.
Eerily like what the ocean does – recede a lot – before a tsunami comes barreling in!
