A CNN panel discussion about the future of the Obama-era DACA program went off the rails, as advocates for illegal immigration shouted that President Trump should not end the controversial program.
On Sunday’s “State of the Union,” former Republican Senator Rick Santorum, former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, Democratic strategist Neera Tanden, and Democratic Congresswoman Barbara Lee debated the merits of DACA.
CNN’s Dana Bush moderated the discussion. Because it’s CNN, the panel naturally had four anti-Trumpers stacked against one lone Trump supporter.
“We have record levels of illegal immigration,” said Santorum, who supports ending DACA.
A smiling Carlos Gutierrez interrupted by gleefully bragging: “And it’s going up!”
Gutierrez argued that DACA must continue because the United States needs illegal immigrants to work, since he claims the workforce isn’t growing fast enough to fill available jobs.
Naturally, Gutierrez didn’t mention that the jobs he’s referring to are low-wage, menial jobs like picking fruit. It’s odd that a Latino politician is cheerfully suggesting that illegal immigrants (the vast majority of whom are fellow Latinos) are only good for cheap labor.

“An economy grows with the number of workers in the economy and the number of jobs in the economy,” he said. “Our native-born workforce is not growing fast enough to support the economy. Without immigration, we cannot grow.”
Santorum pointed out that the United States has record levels of legal and illegal immigration right now. Liberals have intentionally conflated illegal immigration with LEGAL immigration to race-bait and paint those who oppose illegal immigration as racists and bigots.
“Don’t use platitudes,” Santorum told Gutierrez. “We have, in absolute numbers, by far the most immigrants in this country. It is rational for us to have a discussion [about stemming illegal immigration]. And for anyone to suggest that we can’t have a discussion, and somehow you’re a bigot when you do so, is offensive to a whole host of Americans.”

One reason why many Americans oppose illegal immigration (besides the fact that it’s against the law) is that many illegals collect welfare for their “anchor” babies and minor children, causing a massive burden on U.S. taxpayers.

Barack Obama enacted DACA in 2012 to give children who were brought to the U.S. illegally a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit.
More than 800,000 illegals have received DACA protections since 2012, and that number is growing exponentially.
