Ellen catches audience members stealing merchandise backstage, and calls them out ON AIR

It’s embarrassing to get caught stealing, but it has to be mortifying when it happens on one of the world’s most popular daytime shows.

In a video obtained from a taping of the “Ellen” show last week, producers set up a table backstage that told audience members to “take one” free souvenir item.

But two women decided that they were going to ignore the sign and grab as much free swag as they could.

What they didn’t know was that they were being secretly recorded on hidden camera the entire time.

“No one will see it,” one of the women whispered as one of them, identified as Nancy, grabbed three items.

Unsatisfied with her score, she returned later to trade a mug for a hat.

The other woman took a shot glass, t-shirt and a pencil.

“I just wanted to see how honest my audience was,” host Ellen Degeneres said as she confronted the one women.

Degeneres praised one woman who was seen on the video lamenting the fact that she wanted a T-shirt and a hat, and decided to take a t-shirt and purchase a hat later.

“That’s for you, for being honest,” Ellen said as she gave the fan a hat. “You don’t have to buy it now.”

She also praised her audience, most of them that is, for their honesty.

“Any of you could have taken more than one thing, and you didn’t,” she said. “Except for these ladies right here.”

The entire segment was tongue in cheek but as the woman explained that she was taking an extra item for her sister who couldn’t attend, Degeneres called her on it.

“Yeah, a lot of people’s sisters couldn’t come,” as she called on Nancy to sit in “Ellen Jail,” which was a high stool in front of the crowd.

“Let that be a lesson to you,” the host said. “You think nobody’s watching you and you just need to be a good person, just because you want to be a good person.”
