Anti-Trump commentator after Sessions hearings: ‘All smoke and no fire’

Attorney General Jeff Sessions‘ Tuesday testimony before Congress did nothing whatsoever to bolster Democratic conspiracy theories about President Trump and Russia, but nationally syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer, no fan of the president, believes what it did do was expose the “absurdity of the whole exercise.”

Appearing on The Story with host Martha MacCallum Tuesday evening, Krauthammer expressed the belief that Sessions “helped himself a lot” with his testimony.

Calling attempts to connect Sessions to Russian collusion “absurd,” Krauthammer wondered why having a “brief, completely inconsequential, and forgettable” run-in with the Russian ambassador is all of a sudden a “crime.”

Ticked off Sessions tells off Senator Wyden in fiery exchange

“This seems to be a case of all smoke and no fire. Yes, it all looks like this is a cover-up, but where’s the crime? It’s the first cover-up in history with the absence of a crime,” Krauthammer said. “This is just a sideshow of a sideshow. They’re going up tributaries to try and find anybody who can be condemned. I thought Sessions did a very good job fending off all of these charges. Where is the evidence of obstruction?”

Krauthammer even called the belief among leftists that Trump must be taken down with virtually no evidence against him “sort of un-American.”

“This is supposed to be about Russia meddling in our election… then it was supposed to be about collusion,” he said, but there is nothing so far that “implicates” the president.

But, “I’m open to empirical evidence. I used to be a doctor.”

It seems increasingly clear that continued Democratic attempts to distract the country and Congress with these pointless investigations and hearings have a lot less to do with actual evidence and a lot more to do with impeding, delaying, and obstruction President Trump’s agenda.
