‘Keep it going’: ‘GoFundMe’ amount for fallen Green Beret who leaves 5 kids shows who Americans truly are

Far exceeding expectations, donations have poured in online in support of the family of a U.S. Green Beret who was killed last week in combat.

A GoFundMe page for the wife and children of  Staff Sgt. Mark De Alencar set an original goal of $15,000, but by Saturday that goal was surpassed as donations reached over $237,000.

De Alencar was killed from injuries he sustained when his unit encountered small arms fire while fighting ISIS extremists in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province last week. The 37-year-old from Edgewood, Maryland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

The GofundMe campaign was started by a family friend in an effort to help De Alencar’s wife and five children who range in age from 3 to 17.

“Our community has been hit hard in the last passing months and I just felt the need to try and do my part and help out his family,” Nikki Damron wrote on the GoFundMe page, adding that De Alencar’s wife “now has the task of raising their five kids on her own.”

Damron expressed that she did not want to “draw un-needed attention ” to the family but felt she needed to do something to help.

“As a fellow military wife, I feel it is my duty to make every effort to ensure his wife and family are taken care of,” she wrote.

The Special Forces soldier was the recipient of many awards including the Purple Heart, five Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Special Forces tab, the Ranger tab, the Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge, according to Army Times.

“Joining SF was a huge dream of Marks, one he worked very hard to achieve,” Damron wrote on the donation page.

On Thursday, the U.S. dropped the “mother of all bombs” in Nangarhar, targeting an ISIS tunnel complex and killing 39 ISIS militants.
