President Donald Trump’s administration is thinking about conducting a national tax credit scholarship initiative that would provide working-class families with billions of dollars so their children could attend private schools.
Religious schools would also fall under the new policy, as reported by Politico.
Trump stated that he wants “every single disadvantaged child in America, no matter what their background or where they live, to have a choice about where they go to school,” while speaking at the White House with teachers and parents.
The pro-public school faction has called Trump’s tax credit idea a veiled voucher program that would deprive already struggling public schools of critical tax money. Meanwhile, conservatives are concerned that Trump’s plan would result in more federal intervention and force a kind of standardization for schools previously influenced by nonprofit groups (i.e. religious denominations).
The prospective tax credit initiative could be included on a more substantial tax reform bill that has been delayed by the pending Obamacare repeal.
