Dems get burned; they thought they could block nominees by not showing up, they were WRONG

Senate Republicans got the best of Democrat committee members who attempted to hold up the nomination process of two of President Donald Trump’s cabinet picks by boycotting the committee hearings.

The GOP Senate Finance Committee members changed the rules and approved them anyway. As a result, Treasury secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin and Health and Human Services secretary nominee Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., were sent out for approval by the full Senate.

When the Democratic committee members pulled a no-show in order to hold up the confirmation process, the Republican members unanimously agreed to change the rules — which normally require at least one member of each party to be present in order to conduct committee business.

That stunt was apparently the last straw for committee Chairman Orrin Hatch.

“It’s just another way of roughing up the president’s nominees,” the Utah Republican said, according to The Hill. “They have been treated fairly. We have not been treated fairly.”

The GOP members only made the change after Democratic members failed to attend committee meetings for two days running. The boycotting Democrats claim that both nominees had made misleading statements to lawmakers that needed to be resolved.

“Both nominees have yet to answer important questions that impact the American people,” committee Democrats wrote in a letter sent to Hatch Wednesday, according to The Hill.

“Further, we have significant concern that both Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Price gave inaccurate and misleading testimony and responses to questions to the Committee. These cabinet nominees should answer basic questions that the American people deserve answers to before moving forward.”

Hatch disagreed and added that if they were so concerned about the information they claimed to be lacking, boycotting the hearing wasn’t the way.

“Oh, come on. Come on,” he said. “They don’t have one argument that’s worthwhile. Not one. And if they had, they should have shown up.”
