‘President Trump is right’: Israeli PM Netanyahu tweets support, critics be damned

At least one foreign leader is fully behind Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall on America’s southern border with Mexico, and he’s in a prime position to know.

On Thursday, in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump specifically pointed out Israel as a place where a badly needed wall had been constructed and ended up being effective in it stated purpose, to stop refugees and migrants from illegally crossing.

“People want protection,” Trump said. “And a wall protects. All you have to do is ask Israel. They were having a total disaster coming across and, and they had a wall. It’s 99.9 percent stoppage.”

The fact that the Israeli barrier has worked splendidly is beyond dispute:

Israel’s Population, Immigration, and Borders Authority has released dramatic statistics reflecting how effective the construction of a border fence has been at stemming the entry of illegal migrants seeking to cross the border from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

According to the government, the number of illegal entries has declined from the thousands in each recent year to just several dozen this year … It’s an incredible drop after 10,440 were caught in 2012, 17,298 in 2011 and 14,715 in 2010.

Liberals have harshly criticized Netanyahu for his solidarity with Trump and Americans interested in maintaining a country. For many liberal Jews it’s an “OK for me but not for thee” kind of situation.

Former Obama appointed U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro was one of them, sending out a series of hypocritical tweets.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Yesh Atid Party head MK Yair Lapid also was critical of Netanyahu, accusing him on Twitter of straining Israeli-Mexican relations.

“Netanyahu made a serious mistake,” Lapid said. “With his tweet in support of Trump’s wall, he is crudely stepping into a conflict that is tearing apart American society,” he said.

“It’s a needless declaration of war on Mexico and Hispanics,” said Lapid. The statement was also a form of divorce form the Democratic party, to which a majority of American Jews belong.

“His opinion on the wall is not important. Don’t we have enough problems of our own?” Lapid said.

Interestingly, the very same Post article that criticized the Israeli PM for supporting Trump’s wall praised the effectiveness of their own wall:

According to the Defense Ministry, the fence has already slashed the number of illegal African migrants arriving in Israel, with only 213 breaching the barrier in 2015. But the number of successful infiltrations prompted authorities to raise the height from 5 meters to 8 meters along a 17-kilometer stretch, the ministry said.

The raising of the fence, along with additional detection devices, “significantly curbed the flow of illegal infiltration into Israel, with only 11 successful attempts to cross the fence throughout 2016,” it said.

We get it, apples and oranges, or something.
