WaPo remembers the last time it forgot the race of a Chicago resident brutally assaulted over Trump

In a recent report on the racially and politically-tinged alleged kidnap and torture of a white man, Washington Post referenced a similar attack in Chicago, but conspicuously omitted the races of both the perpetrators and the victim.

In the days following Trump’s election, David Wilcox, 49 of Chicago, got in a minor fender bender on the streets of Chicago. While attempting to collect insurance information, four black assailants beat him continuously and recorded the entire incident.

Like the incident of alleged kidnap and torture, the assailants frequently shouted the man’s race and anti-Trump slogans.

When covering the kidnap video, WaPo mentioned the Wilcox case, but focused primarily on the “voted Trump” similarity. WaPo, which frequently and loudly proclaims the race of white officers involved in police shootings, failed to find the ethnicity of the perpetrators in Wilcox case worth reporting.

“In November, the day after the presidential election, a group of people were recorded beating a 49-year-old man while shouting, ‘You voted Trump’ and ‘Don’t vote Trump.’ Four people were charged with vehicular hijacking in connection with that incident,” WaPo wrote.

In its treatment of the most recent attack in Chicago, which features a mentally challenged victim who is mercilessly tortured on Facebook Live by a group of black perpetrators, WaPo again avoids identifying the race of the people involved. In the video, the group took turns abusing the victim, at one point forcing him to drink toilet water.

WaPo doesn’t mention race until about a third of the way through the report, and when it did, used language markedly less aggressive than its typical coverage.

“Police declined to give the race of the attackers or the victim. In the video, the attackers appear black. The victim appears to be white,” WaPo wrote as way of mentioning the race.
