US reportedly finds intermediaries between Russia and WikiLeaks, Trump draws skepticism

U.S. intelligence officials have reportedly identified the intermediaries used by Russia to provide WikiLeaks with stolen emails.

The classified intelligence report identifying the go-betweens was presented to President Obama on Thursday, US officials familiar with the report told CNN. A briefing is scheduled for Friday for President-elect Donald Trump.

Though officials said there was no “smoking gun” as far as Russia intentionally interfering with the U.S. election to benefit Trump, they were confident of Russian involvement and intent after U.S. intelligence agencies received new information following the election, CNN reported.

A senior U.S. intelligence official told NBC News that the report presented to Obama also said that U.S. intelligence picked up senior Russian officials celebrating Trump’s election victory.

“Highly classified intercepts illustrate Russian government planning and direction of a multifaceted campaign by Moscow to undermine the integrity of the American political system,” the official told NBC.

Two top intelligence officials also told NBC that the report confirmed cyber attacks against the Democratic National Committee last year as well as the White House, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the State Department and American corporations.

Trump, meanwhile, has been skeptical of Russia’s involvement in the hacking and tweeted that “politics” was behind NBC’s reporting.

The president-elect also called into question why Democrats are so outraged at Russian hacking but have blocked FBI attempts to search the Democratic National Committee’s servers in order to trace any hacking evidence.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has repeatedly denied that any of the his sources were Russian and earlier this week accused the Obama administration of trying to undermine the incoming Trump administration
