MSNBC got some viewer backlash after it cut away from a Louisiana sheriff’s expletive-filled press conference.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand condemned obscene comments and threats he and other officers have faced since the investigation began in the road rage shooting death of former NFL star Joe McKnight.

“Not a single witness has said up to this day that there was one racial slur uttered during the course of these events and unfortunately, a life was lost, but you want to know something, folks?” Normand said during a press conference that was aired live on Tuesday. “Two people engaged in bad behavior that day. Why? I don’t know, but they did.”
The angry sheriff then read off some of the expletive-filled comments shared on social media, not censoring any of them.
“It’s not fair for him to be called, ‘You punk-ass Uncle Tom coon, we saw you sell out to them, you ratass faggot punk,’” he read. “That’s the tone of what we call our elected leaders for standing up and simply saying let justice prevail and let the process take its course.”
MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall interrupted in the studio, cutting away from the live coverage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re going to pivot from this, what has been — first of all, let me apologize for some of the language,” Hall said.
“We were not expecting that. That is the sheriff from Jefferson Parish who used several — what he said were quotes directed at sheriffs in his department — slurs, racial slurs and homophobic that did not expect from the sheriff of a police department.”
Some viewers were confused about the sheriff’s statements, misunderstanding the quotes as a “homophobic, slur-filled rant.”
Wow just wow. Sheriff in LA dropping some bombs on #MSNBC.

Joe McKnight’s family deserves better than a homophobic slur-filled rant from the sheriff in Jefferson Parish. That was gross. @msnbc

@Fozzy1138 @MSNBC I’m complaining about MSNBC’s reaction to the Sheriff’s press conference
— Kirby Grimes (@kirby_grimes) December 6, 2016
So @MSNBC it is OK for people to verbally attack police and elected leaders but a sheriff can’t defend himself?!? Keep up the low ratings
— Kirby Grimes (@kirby_grimes) December 6, 2016
@MSNBC the sheriff is stating quotes from others. Not his words. But let’s just forget the facts he must be ranting. #SMH #MSM

@TamronMSNBC come on. Sheriff was quoting. What kind of prissy journalist are you? Who do you think is watching MSNBC?
— Bill Rankin (@billyboyrankin) December 6, 2016
Why are you apologizing #msnbc? What the Sheriff in Louisiana was saying was real and pertinent.
— Essex Noel (@sxnoel) December 6, 2016
@Mediaite That was lame of @MSNBC. Sheriff was making a point about uncalled for public reaction to the call for patience by quoting critics
— CAL (@JFB1900) December 6, 2016
@Mediaite I don’t think @MSNBC has anything to worry abt what the sheriff was saying maybe 10 ppl were watching,
