Michigan’s attorney general sees no point in costing his state’s taxpayers millions of dollars, and possibly its place in the electoral college count so that Jill Stein, who got less than one percent of the vote, can have a recount.
Attorney General Bill Schuette, a Republican, filed a lawsuit to stop the recount and explained his decision in a series of tweets on Friday.
Today I am filing suit to stop @DrJillStein‘s frivolous, expensive recount request.

Mich voters rejected @DrJillStein‘s candidacy and her refusal to accept verified results poses an expensive &a risky threat to MI taxpayers.

It is inexcusable for Stein to put MI votes at risk of paying millions and potentially losing their voice in the Elec College.

And he wants to take his case straight to the state’s Supreme Court.
I have filed an emergency motion with the Mich Supreme Court to bypass the Court of Appeals to ensure a timely process.

Schuette’s office released an official statement later in the day.
“Michigan voters rejected Stein’s candidacy by massive margins but her refusal to accept that state-verified result poses an expensive and risky threat to hard-working taxpayers and abuses the intent of Michigan law,” it read. “We have asked the court to end the recount which Stein is pursuing in violation of Michigan laws that protect the integrity of our elections. It is inexcusable for Stein to put Michigan voters at risk of paying millions and potentially losing their voice in the Electoral College in the process.”
Despite the more than $7 million raised by Stein for recount efforts in three states, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the state’s Republican Party warned that the recount could cost taxpayer’s more than $12 million and, if it carried on too long, would see the state lose it’s electors.
Funds, Sheriff David Clarke pointed out, could be used to help the city of Flint recover from it’s contaminated water issue.
This self-serving Green Party loser is diverting away limited state money that could go to lead water fix in Flint. https://t.co/Is4wmgxT8r
