Clinton recount crusader only supports recounts that help Democrats

Democratic super lawyer Marc Elias is coordinating a recount effort for the Clinton campaign in Wisconsin, while urging Republicans to concede a gubernatorial race where the margin is far closer.

Elias is a recount lawyer of the first order. He has successfully run or participated in recount battles in Minnesota, Virginia, Washington, and Nevada. He has also pursued voting rights and redistricting challenges in almost 10 states.

In addition to representing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Wisconsin matter, he also is advising North Carolina Democrats in the state’s contested gubernatorial race.

Gov. Pat McCrory filed for a recount in the state after he lost to North Carolina Attorney General Democrat Roy Cooper by almost 5,000 votes. Cooper’s lead has grown in the days after the election, leading many election observers to speculate that McCrory is unscrupulously creating controversy in the hopes the GOP-controlled state legislature will intervene (the legislature may resolve contested elections, per North Carolina law).

As McCrory’s hopes of victory are all but dashed, Elias tweeted Monday that he should concede so the work of the transition can begin.

Cooper’s lead over McCrory, while probably insurmountable, remains slim, at fewer than 10,000 votes. (RELATED: ‘Bathroom Bill Gov Demands Recount In North Carolina Race)

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, President-elect Donald Trump leads Clinton by over 20,000 votes, according to the state board of elections.

Elias wrote a blog post on Medium Saturday, acknowledging the height of the task before them.

We do so fully aware that the number of votes separating Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the closest of these states — Michigan — well exceeds the largest margin ever overcome in a recount. But regardless of the potential to change the outcome in any of the states, we feel it is important, on principle, to ensure our campaign is legally represented in any court proceedings and represented on the ground in order to monitor the recount process itself.

He also argued the election was “unique in the degree of foreign interference,” and warranted diligence.
