Senator responds to Cruz’s Trump endorsement in song – and it’s pretty funny

With Sen. Ted Cruz disappointing many of his staunch supporters on Friday when the Texas Republican announced that he will vote for GOP nominee Donald Trump, a colleague in the Senate picked a hilarious way to respond.

…taking the liberty to assume he WAS responding to Cruz’s big revelation.

Under the hashtag #FridayFeeling, freshman Sen. Ben Sasse from Nebraska posted a video of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ hit “I Won’t Back Down.”

Sasse went on record during the thick of the GOP primary to say he would not vote for Trump if he were the party’s nominee, and has stood by the decision.

“My current answer for who I would support in a hypothetical match-up between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton is: Neither of them,” he said back in February. “I sincerely hope we select one of the other GOP candidates, but if Donald Trump ends up as the GOP nominee, conservatives will need to find a third option.”

The stance prompted Trump to respond by calling Sasse a “real genius.” The senator was also included on a list of so-called GOP traitors.

Regardless of the intended message behind the Petty hit, social media users — minus a Trump supporter or two — were more than pleased… here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
