Debbie Wasserman Schultz fought for her political life in Florida primary; upset fell through

Embattled Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz managed to edge out her primary opponent, progressive law professor Tim Canova, in her Tuesday primary.

With 81 percent of precincts reporting, she leads her opponent by 15 points in the Democratic nomination for Florida’s 23rd District.

Canova, who was backed by former Democratic presidential candidate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, raised an astonishing amount of money throughout the race – but it was not enough to pull out a win.

Wasserman Schultz came under fire in July following a massive hack of of nearly 20,000 of the Democratic National Committee’s emails just ahead of the Democratic National Convention. It lead to her resignation as party chair, after the emails revealed she had actively attempted to derail Sanders’ presidential campaign.

The congresswoman was leading her anti-establishment opponent by 10 points in the polls ahead of the election, but Canova supporters remained hopeful he could garner the support for a political upset.

As noted by Politico, with the help of endorsements from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in conjunction with super PAC Patriot Majority PAC spending $640,000 on her campaign, she managed to pull out a win despite her recent controversies.

Wasserman Schultz is expected to easily win her race in November.
