Obama tells CBS that Hillary stinks at giving speeches just ahead of her big DNC speech

President Barack Obama has a knack for back-handed compliments when it comes to Hillary Clinton.

On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, Obama told CBS News that he was “clear-eyed” about what Clinton has to offer as president.

Aside from the indication that he doesn’t like her enough to vacation together, Obama suggested Clinton is not the best at giving speeches — the one thing the president excels at above all else.

“You know, we don’t go vacationing together,” he told “Face the Nation” anchor John Dickerson. “I think that I’ve got a pretty clear-eyed sense of both her strengths and her weaknesses.”

And delivering a stem-winder is apparently not among the perceived strengths the president envisions.

“She’s not always flashy,” Obama added. “And there are better speech makers.”

He also reiterated that Clinton’s decision to use a private email server as his secretary of state was a “mistake.”

All of which must have Team Hillary thinking, “With friends like this…”

But Obama did fulfill the expectation of building Clinton up as Democratic delegates come together this week to nominate her as the party’s standard-bearer, saying she “is somebody who knows as much about domestic and foreign policy as anybody, is tough as nails, is motivated by what’s best for America and ordinary people, understands that in this democracy that we have — things don’t always happen as fast as we’d like. And it requires compromise and grinding it out.”
