We’re not supposed to know who Donald Trump is selecting to be his running mate until Friday, but Fox News might have already let the cat out of the bag.
After all, if there weren’t a darned good reason, why release a perfectly good contributor, especially one who used to be Speaker of the House?
According to a statement by Jay Wallace, Fox News executive vice president for news, “FOX News Channel has mutually agreed to suspend its contributor agreement with Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich effective immediately. Due to the intense media speculation about Gingrich’s potential selection as Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential candidate, we felt it best to halt his contributor role on the network to avoid all conflicts of interest that may arise.”
While Gingrich has confirmed he’s being vetted, others on the short list include New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, among others.
So, is the network just being cautious, or do they know something the rest of us don’t?
Many conservatives, such as Fox News host Sean Hannity, have been pushing for the Gingrich pick for a long while, pointing to his strong experience, debate skills, and political acumen.
Others, like prominent and longtime Trump supporter Ann Coulter, who just penned a book called, “In Trump We Trust,” think a Gingrich pick would be a devastating mistake. Of the pressure for Trump to choose a political insider, Coulter writes, “This is completely wrong. Trump isn’t a standard-issue GOP, trying to balance the ticket to get his party into power. He’s starting a new party! He’s just blown up the old GOP. Instead of a party for, by and of globalist plutocrats, the new Trumpian party is a party of Americans for America.”
Coulter continues, “The moment Trump chooses his vice presidential candidate, every person in the media will be handed a personalized crowbar to pry daylight between Trump and his nominee.”
This isn’t far-fetched, as Gingrich to much media delight, has already been sharply critical of Trump for his statements about the Mexican heritage and political associations of Judge Gonzalo Curiel.
And it will only get worse.
She points to Gingrich’s weakness on immigration, particularly, as not just something that could hurt him politically, but an item that could very well push those who are against Trump to, should he win, seek to impeach the President for the slightest misstep in favor of an “easier-to-work-with” VP.
Instead, Coulter writes, “For his vice president, Trump needs anyone — from business, academia, the military or the political world — who is Hannibal Hamlin on immigration, a warrior to defend our country from the rich’s predatory demands for cheap foreign labor. His running mate also needs to be smart and courageous and not in love with his own press notices.
Among the possibilities Trump ought to be considering are people like Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo (the latter two are up for re-election this year, but perhaps they can run for both offices simultaneously).”
But if the Fox News announcement is any indication, the deal may already be done.
