The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police encountered serious blowback after posting some celebratory tweets after the third police officer was acquitted in the Freddie Gray murder case.
Three up, three down — they probably had a right to blow off some steam and toot their own horn, especially given how they’d been excoriated by Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
But maybe they took it a tad too far.
After the trial judge acquitted Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson of all charges in the matter, the FOP tweeted a meme depicting Leonardo DiCaprio with glass raised, along with the words, “Here’s to the Baltimore 6 defense team, the FOP and Detective Taylor.”
Detective Dawnyell Taylor was the lead investigator into Gray’s death; Goodson drove the van in which Gray was transported.
They followed up with another meme Saturday morning, depicting Mosby beneath the words, “The Wolf That Lurks.”
That second tweet was originally posted by the New York Police Department — the union simply re-tweeted it.

Nevertheless, both tweets were removed after facing criticism such as this from black activist Brittany Packnett:
From the @FOP3, Baltimore’s Police Union.

And the union continued to get flak.

They also got a call from Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, who tweeted:

Although the Baltimore FOP removed the two memes, it kept this sobering reminder to prosecutors in the Freddie Gray case.
Prosecutors have little time to decide how to proceed with next trial in the death of Freddie Gray https://t.co/YP4b43qgHf

There are still three more trials ahead, and fingers are crossed on both sides.
