First, it looks like Cruz’s “backroom deal” with John Kasich may be going up in smoke and now this?

Texas Democrats filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission claiming the Ted Cruz campaign has violated federal election law, WFAA reported.

The Texas Democrats want an investigation into a campaign event where a fundraiser was allegedly soliciting unlimited donations for the Cruz.

Politico broke the story and obtained a recording of the solicitations at the fundraising event held in December 2015. The official Democrat complaint announcement came on Monday.

“If you hit your max then we have a table for you that is the unlimited table,” Keet Lewis, a bundler for the campaign is heard saying, according to Politico.

“It can take corporate dollars, it can take partnership dollars, and that’s the super PAC, Stand for Truth, so pick up some of that information.”

Federal law limits campaigns from soliciting donations in excess of $5,000. While officials are allowed to direct donors to super PACs for larger donations, they cannot outwardly ask for them.

In this case, Lewis is heard asking for unlimited and corporate dollars, according to Politico. That’s a “no-no” the Texas democrats are ready to exploit.

“He’s got to face the consequences, own up to it and make it right,” Democrat party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said on a conference call with reporters. “We’ve already seen that Ted Cruz will lie, cheat and say anything to get into power.”

The Cruz camp has not yet responded to the complaint.  Lewis did respond to Politico early this month where he denied acting as an official agent of the campaign under federal standards.
