What happens if Hillary Clinton gets indicted after she wins the Democratic nomination for president? FBI Director James Comey has democrats pondering that question more seriously this week.
The FBI’s investigation surrounds Clinton’s use of a private email server for government business during her tenure as secretary of state, which came to light in March 2015. Comey said there is no deadline for completion of the investigation.
“Somebody asked me if the Democratic National Convention is a hard stop or a key date for you? Are you doing this aimed at that? And I said, no,” Comey told NBC News Thursday.
“We aspire to do all our investigations in two ways — well and promptly, especially investigations that are of great interest to the public. We want to do them promptly.”
Comey reiterated what he has before, that he is “personally close to this investigation, because I want to ensure that we have the resources, the people, the technology, and the space to do those things, and to do it in the way I hope we do all our work, which is competently, honestly, and independently. And I’m confident that it’s being done that way.”
The scenario Comey hinted to could see the former first lady indicted after the Democratic National Convention, with Clinton as the Democratic nominee.
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, suspects someone in the FBI might leak evidence connected to the email investigation surrounding former secretary of state and would-be Democratic presidential candidate Clinton.
“Is there going to be political interference? If there’s enough evidence to prosecute, will there be political interference?,” Grassley rhetorically asked at a meeting with Des Moines Rotarians Friday, the Des Moines Register reported. “And if there’s political interference, then I assume that somebody in the FBI is going to leak these reports and it’s either going to have an effect politically or it’s going to lead to prosecution if there’s enough evidence.”
Grassley was asked by a reporter after the event if this was something the FBI should be doing.
“I wouldn’t be encouraging it because if it’s a violation of law, I can’t be encouraging a violation of law,” he said. “This is kind of my own opinion, this is something I’ve heard.”
Clinton said at a town hall last month that she was not the target of the investigation.
