Giuliani: Trump should get nomination if close to delegate requirement

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani suggested that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump should receive the GOP nomination, even if he falls short of the 1237 delegates required.

Appearing on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, Giuliani told co-host Chris Cuomo that if Trump, “is within 20 or 30 within the nomination, they have to give it to him.”

Cuomo noted those aren’t the Republican National Committee’s rules.

“I know, but they change other rules, so why not change that rule?” Giuliani asked. “Just because it is a rule, doesn’t mean it’s fair.”

The former prosecutor went on:

If you get three points for a basket and I get two, that’s an unfair rule. That’s what this is all about. All that backroom, I mean, I think you have all the Sanders votes and all the Trump votes, because they’re disgusted with the backroom politics that’s been going on.

Giuliani said last week he would vote for Trump but said he “was not part of the campaign.” Cuomo pressed him as to what that meant.

He continued:

I’m voting for him, I’ll do whatever they would like me to do, but I’m not part of the campaign apparatus, I don’t speak for the campaign. When I endorse somebody, I join their campaign. I join their campaign staff. Their campaign staff sends me out to do speeches, to do things like that. Donald’s a very, very good friend, I believe he’d be the best candidate. I think he’d be the person I would like to see win.

Trump is poised to do very well in Tuesday’s New York primary. In Tuesday’s CNN appearance, Giuliani conditionally endorsed Trump. Again, Cuomo asked what that meant.

“Okay,” Giuliani answered. “I’m Rudy Giuliani, I mean a lot in New York politics, I endorse Donald Trump, but I’m not part of the campaign.”

“I’m willing to accept, if you want to interpret that as an endorsement,” he added. “If you interpret that as an endorsement, it’s an endorsement. But if you interpret that in any way as a suggestion that you shouldn’t vote for Donald Trump, absolutely not. Trump is clearly the best choice.”
