In a press conference on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan strongly criticized Donald Trump’s foreign policy positions. Back from a recent congressional delegation trip to the Middle East, Ryan discussed Obama administration policy as well as Trump’s comments and policy positions and expressed sympathy for those in the region who have been “rattled” by both. Calling “unrealistic” any plans to draw back American involvement in the Middle East, Ryan apparently wants to make sure our allies and others in the region know he’ll do everything he can to ensure the gravy train continues unabated.

Among other things, Trump has suggested that allies who receive our help should pay more, that the United States should boycott oil from Saudi Arabia unless they provide ground troops to fight extremists in their own corner of the world, and that America should consider withdrawing from an obsolete NATO.

Ryan told reporters, “There is a commonality that this has been our problem too long, it shouldn’t be our problem any more if we just pull out, we can fortress America and we will be better off. I don’t buy that. The reason I don’t buy that is it is going to come to us. Who else is going to help lead the world … to ultimately extinguish radical Islamic terrorism? And if we just pull back and think our oceans are going to save us, the evidence of the last couple of decades disproves that theory.”

Addressing other criticisms he has had of Trump this campaign, Ryan said, “When he proposed the Muslim immigration ban, that really got under my skin, so I spoke out very forcefully the day after. When you see our beliefs our values and conservative principles being disfigured, you have to speak out for it if you’re a party leader.”

We get it, Mr. Speaker. Invade the world, then invite the world. Sounds like a great plan, unless you’re a middle class American worker that is.
