Tens of thousands of people signed an online petition to allow the open carry of guns at the Republican National Convention, but the petition was actually created by a Hillary Clinton supporter to “to test the limits of the party’s support for the Second Amendment. ”
“Everyone wants to call it satire or trolling,” petition-starter James P. Ryan said. “But it is a serious issue. I tried to write the petition taking [Republicans] at 100 percent face value. If the rest of us get to have law-abiding citizens protecting us with guns at restaurants and schools,” Ryan added, then Republicans should have it at their convention, the Hill reported.
Republicans agreed, and to Ryan’s “surprise,” the petition had garnered 50,000 signatures by Tuesday morning and a whole lot of attention, the Hill reported.

That guy who started the petition to bring guns to the RNC? Hillary-supporting troll: https://t.co/PR2Tjljk5w

Ryan, a “Democrat activist and blogger” admitted he created the petition as satire. Ryan reportedly sought representation from several New York City public relations firms because of the buzz created by his phony petition.
"Guns at RNC petition," I'd have no problem with it being from a DNC op, but much with it being an anonymous DNC op. https://t.co/xaatEZMVNl

As of this moment the petition at Change.org has more than 50,000 signatures.
The Republican National Convention will be held in Cleveland, Ohio in June. Ohio is an “open carry” state but the venue for the convention, Quicken Loans Arena, is a gun-free zone.
When the candidates were asked for their positions, Donald Trump said he needed to study if further while Senator Ted Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich said they would leave the decision up to the U.S. Secret Service who is providing security for the event.
Ultimately, the petition is immaterial because the Secret Service rejected the proposal.
