Hot mic catches Hillary discussing Chris Christie’s Trump endorsement; ‘did he have a debt?’

During a commercial break at the taping of Monday night’s MSNBC town hall, Hillary Clinton spoke candidly about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s motivations behind endorsing Donald Trump — unaware that a hot mic was recording her every word.

She also berated the media for its seemingly non-stop coverage of the Republican presidential front-runner and speculated about Christie’s political future.

“You guys can’t stop covering him,” Clinton told moderator and MSNBC’s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews. “He is a dangerous presence. It’s just like candy by the bushel.”

Matthews admitted that MSNBC has “progressive leanings, obviously,” adding “but nobody can tell what people want to watch.”

“People must think they want to watch him,” Clinton replied.

“They laugh at him,” corrected Matthews.

The pair moved on to Christie.

“Why did he [Christie] support him [Trump]?”

Matthews said that all of Trump’s endorsers “want a future” politically.

“Did he have a debt?” Clinton wondered.

Matthews ignored the question and began explaining that New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat, “isn’t going anywhere,” leaving Christie “nowhere” to go in New Jersey politics.

“I don’t think he would win right now,” Clinton chimed in.

“I don’t think he can win as a senate candidate either,” Matthews agreed.

The two then moved on to non-political matters, reminiscing about “Tommy Smothers” and “Ed Sullivan.”

Matthews finally asked, “Did you watch the end of Downton Abbey?” At that point the audio cut out.
