Beer-induced escalator joyride – it hurts just to watch

Ever been tempted to take a shortcut down an escalator?

One London man tried the experiment, with a beer in hand, and found the results to be a bit painful. The man, appearing to be about 30 years old, climbed onto the barrier between the up and down escalators at the Angel station of the London Underground.

With beer in hand, and egged on by friends and onlookers, he attempted the slide but slipped off after crashing into a sign that ironically warned passengers to stay to the right. The video, caught by his friend David Bailey and posted to Facebook, captured the unfortunate moment when the unnamed man crashed into a sign on the trip down and was sent hurling to the ground, all to the delight of his friends who could not stop laughing.

“It was a real spur of the moment thing,” Bailey told the Daily Mail. “We were all shocked he did it but couldn’t help laughing.” Bailey admitted that it was “not the best idea we’ve ever had,” as his friend ended up at the first-aid station with cuts and bruises.

London transportation officials were not happy.

“Safety is our top priority,” said Mark Evers, Director of Customer Strategy for London Underground, “and pranks like this are dangerous for not only those involved but also to other customers.”

“There were hundreds of people going up the escalator and they were in absolute shock,” Bailey said, according to the Mail. “It was the middle of the night. He carried on drinking and went out afterwards. He said he woke up in the morning and he couldn’t move for the rest of the week.”
