French interior minister calls for some mosques to be shut down

In the wake of the coordinated, multi-targeted attack in Paris by Islamic State terrorists, the French interior minister has called for the dissolution of any “mosques where hate is preached.”

Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has been a hard-liner on radical Islam, especially after the January attack on the Paris office of the satirical periodical Charlie Hebdo. Since speaking out on his concerns, the country has stepped up surveillance of mosques and cultural centers, The Huffington Post reported.

France’s five million Muslims make up about 7.5 percent of its general population, but make up a staggering 60 percent of France’s prison population. Because of this, France has also taken steps to thwart radicalization of prisoners.

France has also deported imams — 40 since 2012 — for preaching hatred. Almost one-fourth of them were deported during the fiorst six months of this year.

“Foreign preachers of hate will be deported [and their mosques] will be shut down,” Cazeneuve told Agence France-Presse earlier this year.

After Friday’s attacks in Paris, Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s conservative National Front Party, called for an evaluation of Europe’s migrant crisis and tweeted:

The hashtag can be translated as #IslamicTerrorist.

The Post reported:

Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president and current leader of the country’s main opposition party, called for a new foreign policy. He urged President François Hollande to rethink immigration policy and tighten laws against those who visit radical websites or travel to international jihadist sites, the Financial Times reports.

Muslims around the world have stood in solidarity with the victims of Friday’s attacks and defended themselves against a massive spike in Islamophobia. A group of imams gathered outside the Bataclan concert hall Sunday morning to pray and sing the French national anthem with mourners.

Analysts have warned that a backlash against refugees could be exactly what the Islamic State wants.
