Rep. Paul Ryan’s athletic prowess served him well after his election as the new House speaker — he dodged a hug from House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi.
If nothing else, this signals a new era in House politics — no more huggie-kissie between the speaker and minority leader. It’s time to get to business.
After the Wisconsin Republican secured 236 votes from the full House Thursday morning to win the speakership, the California Democrat — herself a former speaker — presented Ryan with the speaker’s gavel.
“It is my privilege to hand this gavel to the Speaker of the House, Congressman and honorable Paul Ryan.” she said.

At that point, Pelosi brought her left arm up, in an apparent attempt to give Ryan a hug, but he was able to adroitly dodge the bullet by offering his hand instead.
