It’s no joke that liberty-minded Republicans think very little of Jeb Bush. But in New Hampshire, a mock candidate who isn’t even on the ballot, received more votes than the former Florida governor.
“Honest Gil” Fulbright, a fictional candidate running a satirical campaign, received 12 votes in the New Hampshire Republican Liberty Caucus straw poll a week ago. That’s more than Bush got, according to the Manchester Union Leader.
Sen. Rand Paul won the straw poll with 445 votes, followed by Sen. Ted Cruz. Ben Carson finished third.
Candidate Fulbright is really an actor named Frank Ridley, who is working for Represent.us, a nonpartisan group promoting campaign reform.
Promising to be “100 percent honest” with voters, Fulbright said “Face it, I am a puppet for special interests and lobbyists. And I will break any campaign promises that rub my donors the wrong way.”
Josh Silver, director of Represent.us, told TIME Magazine that Fulbright’s performance in the straw poll was a “pleasant surprise.”
“Voters on both sides of the aisle are fed up with politicians who represent special interests and lobbyists instead of the American people,” he said. “Honest Gil strikes a chord because he exposes our corrupt political system for what it is.”
Fulbright is continuing his mock campaign, undaunted by the challenges he faces. “Some have pointed out that I’m not on the ballot anywhere,” he said. “But despite this obstacle, I’m still in a dead heat with Lindsey Graham.”
As for Bush, Fulbright pointed out “Now there’s a guy who has raised hundreds of millions of dollars without saying anything of appreciable substance.”
“His donors even call him a straw man, stuffed with cash,” he added.
Apparently, the fiercely independent Yankee voters in the Granite State agree.
