Senate committee passes bill restricting employer access to employees’ social media accounts – Employers might have a pretty tough time getting access to their employees’ Twitter and Facebook accounts if a new bill passes through the Florida Legislature this year. SB 186, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, would make it illegal for any employer in Florida to require access to a social media account of an employee or prospective employee. Read more
Lawmakers set the stage for redistricting session, hope to be done by Nov. 6 — Legislative leaders hope to have a new map of the 40 state Senate districts done by 3 p.m. Nov. 6, according to the official “call” of a special redistricting session set to begin in two weeks. House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, and Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, issued the call Monday for the special session, which will start at noon Oct. 19. Read more
Heavy hitters introduce Carlos Lopez-Cantera in Washington – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carlos Lopez-Cantera has some influential Washington backers hosting a meet-and-greet for him later this month. The Oct. 21 lunch will be held at the Capitol Hill Club and is hosted by Cesar Conda, former chief of staff to Marco Rubio, and Scott Weaver, a top bundler for Rubio’s presidential campaign. David Jolly says competitive districts can fix Washington dysfunction – David Jolly says he believes he has the antidote for what ills Washington, but believes that at least in his particular case, the Florida Fair Districts amendments and the Florida Supreme Court helped derail that remedy. Speaking at the Suncoast Tiger Bay luncheon in Clearwater on Monday, the Pinellas County representative said that more lawmakers need to reside in competitive congressional districts like the CD 13 seat he currently occupies, but is leaving next year to run for U.S. Senate. South Florida’s film industry gets lift from new studio in Miami – South Florida’s film industry received a boost Monday with the opening of a new movie and TV production studio in downtown Miami built at cost topping $14.5 million. Viacom, the entertainment group whose properties include cable TV channels Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV, has contracted to use the state-of-the-art facility, which was developed through a public-private partnership.
