‘Proud to be a Christian’: Family’s touching statement about shooting victim

He was a Christian, and proud of it.

The family of one of the victims murdered in Thursday’s Umpqua Community College shooting rampage, which specifically targeted Christians, released a statement that was read by a law enforcement official at a Friday afternoon news conference, according it NBC News.

Jason Johnson, age 34, was proud to be a Christian,” the statement said. “Jason recently enrolled in school at Umpqua Community College. Jason’s mother said that Jason was proud of himself for enrolling in school, and so was his mom. They felt that Jason had finally found his path. His family says that he will be loved and missed.”

Multiple sources confirmed that the shooter targeted Christians, shooting them in the head, while wounding non-Christians.

KPTV Fox12 reporter Laura Rillos tweeted:

The reason for Johnson’s late continuation of his education was his struggle with drugs, according to his mother, Tonja Johnson Engel. Johnson participated in a six-month drug rehabilitation program with the Salvation Army.

“The other day, he looked at me and hugged me and said, ‘Mom, how long have you been waiting for one of your kids to go to college?’ And I said, ‘Oh, about 20 years,’” Engel told NBC News.

She added that Johnson kissed her before heading off to his fourth day of class.

“Love ya,” Engel told NBC her son told her. “I’ll see you this afternoon.”

That was the last time she saw her son.
