Despite favorite sons, Florida GOP wooing other contenders – A first-of-its-kind summit in Florida has secured commitments from more than four Republican presidential contenders as the state GOP seeks to build up its ranks ahead of next year’s general election. The Republican Party of Florida announced on Tuesday that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal plan to attend the inaugural Sunshine Summit, to be held Nov. 12-14 in Orlando. Read more
Webster an underdog for House speaker, but still a favorite for some – Orlando Republican Congressman Daniel Webster could be a popular choice for conservatives in his bid to be the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Political analyst Frank Torres said Webster is still an underdog – but he has a fighting chance to replace John Boehner as House speaker. Read more

Florida’s Secretary of State wants judge to scrap redistricting lawsuit – Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner has asked a federal judge to toss out a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of redistricting standards approved by voters in 2010, saying he doesn’t enforce the “Fair Districts” requirements. Attorneys for Detzner filed a 16-page motion last week in federal court in Pensacola arguing that plaintiffs in the case were trying to use him as an “improper expedient” to get around legal obstacles in challenging the controversial standards. Republicans are surveying Latinos in swing states on everything from Uber to Puerto Rican statehood – Latino business owners walked through an upbeat scene at the Viva Miami Hispanic Heritage Business Expo on Friday, with classic ’80s synth music blaring as the Florida Panthers mascot ran through the convention center, playfully accosting passerby. And among the local business booths, was one about Uber — and a petition asking whether the company should be able to operate in Miami-Dade county. Read more
Gwen Graham’s political future mixed, new polls say – New polls show Florida Congresswoman Gwen Graham losing a proposed redrawn 2nd Congressional District seat next election but leading other contenders in a hypothetical matchup for Marco Rubio‘s U.S. Senate seat. But the polls don’t show her standing in the district as currently drawn, which takes in a swath of north Florida roughly from Perry to Bonifay. Read more
