Chaos erupted in a Michigan courtroom as the father of a young girl killed by her babysitter attacked the man who did it.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the melee broke out Friday when the father, Dwayne Smith, was preparing to give a victim impact statement before a judge sentenced Clifford Thomas for his role in the girl’s death.

Instead of giving testimony, though, Smith went on the attack.

The two were separated by Wayne County deputies and the hearing resumed.

Thomas was sentenced to six to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter in the beating death of 3-year-old Jamila Smith in Detroit. The girl’s mother, Jasmine Gordon, was also convicted in her death.

She was sentenced Friday to seven to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and 14 to 25 years for first degree child abuse, the Free Press reported.

Dwayne Smith wasn’t charged for attacking the man who killed his daughter.
