Black Lives Matter ‘rhetoric’ a prime suspect in ‘cold-blooded assassination’ of white deputy

goforth-milesHouston authorities say they’re still looking for a motive in the “assassination” of a deputy who was murdered pumping gas Friday night, but the rhetoric of the “Black Lives Matter” movement is high on the suspect list.

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman announced at a press conference Saturday afternoon that Shannon J. Miles, 30, was arrested early that morning and charged with capital murder, according to local ABC affiliate 13 Eyewitness News.

Investigators said that Miles approached behind Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, who was in uniform and pumping gas, and fired multiple rounds into the officer. When Goforth fell, Miles fired additional rounds.

“I am proud of the men and women that have worked swiftly to apprehend the responsible person who posed a significant threat to both law enforcement and the community at large,” Hickman told reporters. “Our deputies return to the streets tonight to hold a delicate peace that was shattered last evening.”

A motive for the killing of Goforth hasn’t been determined. There’s no evidence that he and Miles had any interaction in the past, so Hickman said it’s a possibility he was influenced by the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

“I think that’s something that we have to keep an eye on,” Hickman said. “The general climate of that kind of rhetoric can be influential on people to do things like this. We’re still searching to find out if that’s actually a motive.”

At an earlier news conference, Hickman referred to the murder as a “cold-blooded assassination.”

“Cops’ lives matter, too,” Hickman said then. “So why don’t we drop the qualifier and say lives matter.”
