Marines sacrificed themselves by diverting Chattanooga terrorist from crowd, official says

The actions of the brave Marines killed in a terrorist attack last week prevented mass murder from becoming a massacre.

According to a law enforcement officer who spoke to The New York Times, at least some Marines who died in the attacks “effectively sacrificed themselves” to prevent American-born Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez from killing a larger group of people nearby.

“This could have been a lot worse,” said the official, who did not want to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation. “It could have been a horrible, horrible massacre — so much worse.”

Law enforcement officials are expected to give a more detailed account of the deadly attack on two military sites last Thursday at a news conference scheduled for later on Wednesday.

The Twitterverse was full of praise for the heroes.
