MSNBC host chickens out of Trump’s big salary bet, Trump responds

donald-trumpAn MSNBC host walked back a statement he’d made Thursday when he called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a liar after Trump called his bluff and challenged him to a wager.

Not only did Lawrence O’Donnell take back his previous statement, he also said he liked the real estate mogul.

The brouhaha began Thursday when O’Donnell appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and said “The Donald” had inflated his income figures in his Federal Election Commission financial statement.

Trump immediately bet a year of his salary against a year of O’Donnell’s that he was right. That evening on his own MSNBC program, O’Donnell crumbled.

When Trump called back on Friday’s “Morning Joe,”  host Joe Scarborough played a clip of O’Donnell’s apology back for him.

“Where I come from, no one settled their disagreements with bets, because no one of us had any money to bet,” O’Donnell said after acknowledging that he liked Trump. “And I might be wrong. I have never said, ‘I know exactly how much Donald Trump made from the entire [“Apprentice” TV] series.’ I don’t know. I’ve made semi-educated guesses about it and I don’t really care very much about it. I stupidly jumped into talking about it.”

Trump sounded surprised, and maybe even a little let down.

“So, this morning is really a little strange for me, Joe. No, I was going to go after Lawrence big, big-league. And I was going to do the challenge and say lots of nasty things about him. But it’s hard to do that now.”

Trump also acknowledged  feeling a tad “guilty.”

“Well, I’m very disappointed because I was really all set to go after him this morning, and now I feel guilty. If I do that, I’d feel very, very guilty,” he said. “Joe, you really ruined my morning, to be honest with you.”
