Bob Beckel let go by Fox News; ‘We couldn’t hold ‘The Five’ hostage to personal issues’

The surly, popular but personally troubled liberal Bob Beckel is permanently parting ways with long-time employer Fox News .

“We tried to work it out with Bob for months, but we couldn’t hold ‘The Five’ hostage to one man’s personal issues,” Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming for Fox told TVNewser.

Beckel’s issues with substance abuse are widely known, and widely publicized during his extended leave of absence after his last appearance on “The Five” in February.

Beckel said he was recovering from back surgery, but TVNewser reported in April that Beckel was also dealing with addiction to prescription pain medicine.

His relapse into addiction during that recovery proved too much for the network.

“He took tremendous advantage of our generosity, empathy and goodwill and we simply came to the end of the road with him. Juan Williams and Geraldo Rivera will be among those rotating on the show for the near future,” Shine added.

Despite differing political opinions Fox viewers expressed concern about Beckel’s health when his absence first became apparent.

The news of Beckel’s permanent split, however, is bringing in a mixed reaction.
