Above and beyond: Cop’s act of kindness rocks Facebook

A different kind of citizen video of police is going viral for an act of kindness that touched the hearts of tens of thousands.

The video, shared more than 100,000 times on Facebook, was shot by Bernice Daniels last Sunday in Philadelphia and shows police Officer Sammy Brinson helping young children who were struggling to bring clothes to the laundromat.

“It made me sit here and actually cry,” Daniels told WTXF-TV.

“They had hampers, not bags, not a push cart, but heavy hampers that they were carrying in their hands to go to that laundromat down the street,” she said.

Daniels was so moved by what she witnessed she had her 9-year-old daughter Bree record it and she uploaded it to Facebook days later.

“Every time I looked at it it brought tears to my eyes,” she told WXTF-TV.

She said she wanted to recognize the officer for his kindness.

“You know what that officer had — that officer had a passion,” she said. “He had a passion for children. Not just for work and doing his job, but a passion for children.”

Marc Gamble told WXTF-TV he was so touched by the gesture he had to share the video.

“I saw it and I said this is a wonderful thing. Never seen nothing like that that was so great, that was so great. I wish I’d seen that cop to shake his hand,” he said.

The Philadelphia Police Department told WXTF-TV that such an act is not unusual and “all in a day’s work.”

But it was enough that Daniels thought he should be commended for it.

Daniels should be commended too, for showing everyone what the heart of those sworn to protect and serve truly is.
