A single mom in Pennsylvania was fired from her job after asking to leave for an hour to get a mammogram.
“It’s unfortunate that I lost my job over being proactive for my health,” Jamie Crytzer, 30, told WKBN-TV.
After finding a lump in her breast last month, Crytzer consulted doctors and scheduled a mammogram for June 15. She said she followed procedure and informed her manager at the Hickory Bar and Grille in Hermitage.
“I let the general manager know and I also let one of the other assistant managers know what was going on on the medical side and also about the appointments,” she told WKBN.
When she was alerted to an opening that allowed her to get the mammogram done a week early, she went to her manager and asked if she could leave work for an hour to get the test done, according to WKBN.
Crytzer said she was told by the manager that her leaving would be “job abandonment.”
Choosing to leave for her appointment, Crytzer arrived at her job for her scheduled shift the next day only to find she had been let go.
She said that the restaurant “felt I had left them with a skeleton shift during lunch” and that she should have kept her original mammogram appointment for the following week, as she had previously requested the time off, according to WKBN.
The Springfield Restaurant Group told WKBN:
“We are unable to comment on this particular occurrence, but we can say that all personnel actions taken were in complete accordance with proper personnel management … We care deeply for our employees and their families.”
Though she is glad her tumor turned out to be benign, Crytzer is now hoping to find another job to pay the bills she incurred and care for her son.
