Marcus Luttrell reveals why he made Rick Perry godfather of his kids

As former Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced he was running for president Thursday, the focus was on two bearded men standing behind him.

The men were Marcus Luttrell, and his brother Morgan. An ex-Navy Seal, Marcus is the author of “Lone Survivor,” a harrowing account of his ordeal as the sole survivor of Operation Red Wings in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Luttrell spoke with the Washington Free Beacon Thursday about why he is supporting Perry for president.

“That’s my family,” he said. “I have been part of the Perry family and have been for a long time, and you back up your family’s play.”

“If you know the inner fabric of a man, what he’s made of, then you know he’s going to do what he says he’s going to do,” Luttrell added. “And that’s really important to me.”

Perry’s political action committee, RickPAC, released a touching video last month that explained his unlikely relationship with the former Navy SEAL.

Luttrell, a living embodiment of an All-American tough guy, nearly came to tears in the video while describing the relationship.

In a feature published in May, The Washington Post described Luttrell as “a broken man in search of a haven” when the vet showed up unannounced in 2007 at the Texas governor’s mansion, requesting to see Perry.

“Over the ensuing months, a virtual father-son relationship blossomed,” the newspaper reported, adding that Perry and his wife helped nurse Luttrell back to health.

They even gave him a spare bedroom — “I was the creepy guy in the attic,” Luttrell told The Post.

“When I came into the Perry family, it was one of those deals where it was the only family I had,” he said. “I didn’t have that father figure growing up like that, somebody who genuinely cared about me. … Gov. Perry taught me how to be a good man.”
