An anonymous Baltimore police officer wants the world to know that Freddie Gray was no stranger to police and cooperated as a witness in a number of cases.
The officer, calling himself simply “Mike,” told Fox News host Megyn Kelly on Friday that, as he had done before, Gray “put on a show” while being arrested in his fateful apprehension on April 12, calling the tactic an effort to keep up a front that he was not cooperating with police.
“Freddie was one of those ones where, a lot of times, he would put on that show on the streets, but you would bring him into the station and he was a great witness,” the unnamed officer said. “I mean, he helped the department solve many crimes and different acts of violence. So it wasn’t uncommon for Freddie to do that type of thing and then go into the station.”
The officer speculated that Donta Allen, the witness who reportedly told police Gray was intentionally trying to injure himself, retracted the story for the same reason.
“I think that’s him trying to cover up his reputation on the streets,” the officer said of Allen. “I think that’s him, you know, trying to save himself on the streets and possible retaliation by other, you know, individuals on the streets.”
There’s a mantra in the city, the officer said: “Snitches get stitches in Baltimore.”
