Lena Dunham article compared Jews to dogs; outrage erupts when New Yorker published it

Actress, writer, director Lena Dunham is drawing fire from Jewish support groups for a piece she wrote for The New Yorker magazine, in which she describes a number of scenarios and challenges readers to guess whether she’s talking about her dog or her Jewish boyfriend.

Her premise is that you won’t be able to tell the difference — dog or Jew, it’s all the same.

Titled “Dog or Jewish Boyfriend? A quiz,” it notes that he’s a finicky eater, “because he comes from a culture in which mothers focus every ounce of their attention on their offspring and don’t acknowledge their own need for independence as women. They are sucked dry by their children, who ultimately leave them as soon as they find suitable mates.”

That was followed up with, “As a result of this dynamic, he expects to be waited on hand and foot by the women in his life, and anything less than that makes him whiny and distant.”

She also notes that “he doesn’t tip,” and to that end, “he never brings his wallet anywhere.”

And then there’s “he has hair all over his body, like most males who share his background.”

She also notes that “he is openly hostile toward the Hasidic community, focusing most of his rage on their bulky (but chic) fur hats.”

You get the idea, right? Well, so did a lot of others. Horror writer John Marino Gherbaz tweeted:

The Israeli Outlook noted Dunham’s hit show “Girls” on HBO and tweeted these observations:

And another Twitter user saw historical significance in the Jew-dog comparison.

Calling the article “tasteless,” the Anti Defamation League’s director Abraham Foxman, wrote, according to CBS New York:

Humor is a matter of taste, and people can disagree if it is funny or not. Some will certainly find offensive Lena Dunham’s stereotypes about cheap Jews offensive. Others will take issue with the very idea of comparing a dog and a Jewish boyfriend. The piece is particularly troubling because it evokes memories of the ‘No Jews or Dogs Allowed’ signs from our own early history in this country, and also because, in a much more sinister way, many in the Muslim world today hatefully refer to Jews as “dogs.”

This isn’t the first time Dunham has done or said something outrageous. In a memoir published late last year, she casually wrote that as a child she’d sexually abused her young sister, Grace.

When she was criticized for this, she called her detractors “disgusting,” according to The Daily Caller.

Maybe the only thing disgusting is that which is staring at her in the mirror.
