One pilot on doomed jet was locked out of cockpit; why didn’t co-pilot let him in?

Sounds revealed from the cockpit voice recorder of the doomed A320 Airbus jetliner that crashed in the Alps show one of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit for the doomed jet’s final minutes, with the co-pilot unable or unwilling to let him in.

According to the New York Times, a French official described conversation between the pilots early into the flight as “very smooth, very cool.” But at some point, one of the pilots stepped out of the cockpit, and at that point, the aircraft began its descent.

“The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door, and there is no answer,” the investigator said. “And then he hits the door stronger, and no answer. There is never an answer.”

He said, “You can hear he is trying to smash the door down.”

The disquieting conclusion?

“We don’t know yet the reason why one of the guys went out,” said the official, who requested anonymity because the investigation was continuing. “But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door.”

Obviously, either something happened to the pilot in the cockpit, or he deliberately angled the aircraft into the mountainside.

The pilots have not been publicly identified.
