Krauthammer: Cruz’s real problem ‘we already tried a first-term senator’

Charles Krauthammer offered his analysis of Sen. Ted Cruz as a presidential candidate Monday on Fox News–and he had some concerns.

“His appeal is ‘I’m the constitutional conservative.  I’m the guy with the liquid tongue.  I can make the case,’” Krauthammer said.

“And he does.  That’s what he’s done all through his career.”

Yet Krauthammer voiced some reservations, comparing Cruz’s constituency to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008.  He said Cruz would have to fight for that constituency should Huckabee run, although “he does have an advantage.”

“His real problem, I think, is this:  Senators are going to have a hard time, first-term senators.  We already tried a first-term senator,” Krauthammer said.

Cruz, a Texas Republican, may not be the only Republican first-term senator in the presidential race. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has not yet announced, but has said he is seriously considering running.

Contrasting Cruz with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Krauthammer said that Walker has “a proven track record,” but lacks the “fluency on issues” that Cruz possesses.

“Cruz talks about, you have to walk the walk rather than just talk the talk, you have to have done something,” Krauthammer said.

“When Walker says I ran the state, I took on the unions, and I won, I think that’s going to be a strong argument.”
