‘A toddler in the White House’: Obama’s mean-spirited act at Gridiron dinner ignites media scorn

At Saturday night’s Gridiron Club dinner, where speakers are expected to engage in good-natured ribbing, President Obama used the occasion instead to pour on the mean.

The president was joined on the dais by two governors — Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, a Republican, and Virginia’s Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat — for what has traditionally been “an evening of song and skits making light of major players in U.S. politics,” according to Reuters.

But the president’s remarks were more mean-spirited than they were light-hearted banter — his targets were his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, and Senate Republicans.

“You don’t diminish your office by taking a selfie,” Obama told the gathering. “You do it by sending a poorly written letter to Iran.”

That’s supposed to be a joke? Even the left-of-center Huffington Post had to disagree on that one. The website’s White House reporter Jennifer Bendery tweeted:

And others agreed, likening the president to a petulant teenager and even a “toddler in the White House”:

He also took a potshot at Clinton, his former senior-level cabinet member, at a time when she was already down.

“If you think about how things have changed since 2008, back then I was the young tech-savvy candidate of the future,” the president said. “Now I’m yesterday’s news and Hillary’s got a server in her house! I am so far behind.”

But maybe that last one isn’t much of a surprise after all.

Leaks to the media about Clinton’s private email account have reportedly been traced to the White House.
