‘Some guy broke into my house, and I shot him’: Widower makes short work of home invader

An Ohio felon misjudged his 71-year-old target, and it proved a fatal mistake.

After an intruder kicked in the door of his North Columbus home Friday, widower Joseph Miklich fired his shotgun and killed the man, according to the local news station, Channel 10 TV.

Miklich then called 911 and said, “Some guy broke into my house, and I shot him,” Channel 10 TV reported.

Police discovered the burglar on the porch, lying next to the damaged door.

“Somebody kicks in your door and they’re coming in your house, you don’t have to wait for them to come in your house,” Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner told the station.

“There’s a big difference if somebody’s outside, and they’re 20, 30, 40 feet away and they’re not inside your residence. Different story. But somebody is kicking in your door and they’re coming in, most people might consider that to be a threat, and they can take action.”

Neighbors described Miklich as a pleasant man.

“He’s a nice guy, you know?” Chris Grant told Channel 10. “He’s laid back, quiet.”

He’s also a decent shot — he only had to fire the one time.
