Terror threat to Mall of America could result in huge gun rights victory

The terrorist threat against the nation’s largest shopping mall over the weekend has led one state lawmaker to announce plans to challenge the Mall of America’s policy prohibiting patrons from carrying firearms inside.

State Rep. Tony Cornish, the Republican chairman of the Minnesota House of Representative Public Safety Committee, told WCCO in Minnesota on Sunday that the threat by the North African terrorist group al-Shabab showed the mall’s policy is misguided.

“This is completely ridiculous. The complete opposite of what they should be doing,” Cornish said. “If we’re threatened with an attack, the last thing you want to do is disarm citizens.”

The mall currently bans all patrons from carrying firearms inside on the grounds that it’s private property. Under Cornish’s proposal, firearms would be allowed in public areas of the mall, while individual stores would have the option of prohibiting guns if they chose.
