Kansas school takes blind boy’s cane, replaces it with a pool noodle to punish him

Dakota Nafzinger has had eight years to get used to being blind since birth, but nothing prepared him for what happened last week.

Rachel, Dakota’s mom, told local media that staff members at Gracemor Elementary school took away her son’s cane as punishment for hitting a student with it on the bus. The Kansas City school reportedly gave him a swimming pool noodle to use as a substitute.

The school confirmed that they took the boy’s cane, and said it was because it’s school property and they were preventing him from harming himself and other students.

Dakota’s mom is outraged and believes they took his cane to humiliate him for misbehaving.

“He’s gone through so much in his life already, 8 years, 8 years, and I just don’t like someone else putting my son in that position,” she said.

WDAF TV reported that the school has given back the cane due to backlash resulting from coverage of the incident.
